Plantar Fasciitis - Natural Remedies

What exactly is "Plantar Fasciitis"?

It is an inflammation of the thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes.

What is the cause of this?

"Under normal circumstances, your plantar fascia acts like a shock-absorbing bowstring, supporting the arch in your foot. If tension and stress on that bowstring become too great, small tears can arise in the fascia. Repetitive stretching and tearing can cause the fascia to become irritated or inflamed, though in many cases of plantar fasciitis, the cause isn't clear."

The pain for Plantar Fasciitis can be severe, stabbing, and sometimes debilitating.  It can definitely affect your daily life and cause you to have to stop some activities such as exercise, sports, or other movements.

In addition to applying ice to the area and staying off your feet, here are three natural remedies that can help:

1.  Essential Oils.  Apply these oils one layer at a time, and massage in for maximum effect:
     a.  Wintergreen or Birch (inflammation and pain)
     b.  Helichrysum (inflammation and pain)
     c.  Lemongrass (mends damaged tissue)
     d.  Cypress (increases circulation and speeds healing)
     e.  Peppermint (drives oils deeper into tissue)

After massaging the oils in, apply a warm compress

2.  Stretches!  Gently stretch the area upon awakening and several times throughout the day.  Here is a link with some instructions:

3.  Foot alignment socks.  Keeping your feet in line will help ease the torn fascia and facilitate healing:

In most cases, being consistent with the above remedies will bring healing and surgery can be avoided.
