What Is A Tincture?

What are Tinctures and how do you use them?

Tinctures are liquid extracts made from herbs that you take orally (by mouth).

  • Tinctures are usually extracted in an alcohol, such as Vodka.  This serves as a potent solvent and an effective preservative.  Alcohol based tinctures have a virtually unlimited shelf life if stored in a cool, dark location
  • For those who prefer a non-alcohol product, you can put the drops of the tincture into a small amount of hot water (the amount is not important), and this will dissipate the alcohol content, leaving only the herb matter behind.  (Be careful not to have your water so hot that you burn yourself though - it doesn't have to be that hot!)
  • Dosage is very small (1-20 drops).  One dose of an alcohol-based tincture has approximately the same alcohol content as eating a very ripe banana
  • Refrigeration is not necessary
  • Tinctures are easy and convenient to use
  • To take, simply "drop" the recommended number of drops under your tongue, put them in a medicine cup and dilute with water to take as a "dose of medicine", or add the drops to some honey, juice, or tea
  • When taken under the tongue, they enter the bloodstream directly and quickly and can have an immediate effect
  • Other herbs which are nutritive in nature may take several weeks of continual use before best results are seen
Tinctures are a simple and wonderful way to receive benefits from herbs - try one today!
