Elderberry Syrup - Homemade Recipe

Today's recipe is one I have made many times for family and friends since it is so powerful and effective, and it tastes great!

Elderberries (the main ingredient in this recipe) are packed full of antioxidants, phytonutrients, Vitamin C, and dietary fiber.

These berries have been used for centuries across many cultures, including ancient Egyptians (to treat burns and improve the complexion), and Native Americans (to treat infections).  Elderberries are commonly used today across Europe and many other parts of the world to treat colds, flus, and to strengthen the immune system.

In addition to elderberries, this syrup recipe includes several different herbs, as well as honey.

Let me give you the recipe first, and then I'll list some of the healing properties of the other ingredients listed.

Ingredients:

2/3 cup black elderberries (fresh, frozen, or dried)
3.5 cups of water (preferably filtered)
2 tablespoons fresh ginger root (grated)
1 teaspoon cinnamon (not powdered from the grocery store)
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon Wild Cherry Bark
1 cup local, raw honey

Directions:

In a large saucepan, add all ingredients except for the honey

Bring to a boil

Reduce heat and simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally

Remove from heat

Pour liquid through a strainer (I use cheesecloth in a potato ricer to squeeze out all liquid)

Allow liquid to cool

Add honey and stir until it completely dissolves

Transfer to a glass jar (which has preferably been sterilized by boiling it for 10 minutes)

Refrigerate until needed

This can last for several weeks in the fridge as long as it is kept sterile

How to keep it sterile:
Do not contaminate the syrup by drinking out of the jar/bottle or by dipping down into the syrup with a spoon, medicine cup, etc.
Always pour the syrup straight out of the jar into a spoon or medicine cup for dosage
